Harry Potter actor knifed to death in London brawl:

LONDON (AFP) — An 18-year-old actor in the forthcoming Harry Potter film was stabbed to death during a fight outside a London bar on Saturday.

Rob Knox, who plays student Marcus Belby in "Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince", due out in November, was killed in a scuffle in the south-eastern suburb of Sidcup.

Police said a 21-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The fatal stabbing takes to 14 the number of teenagers violently killed in the British capital this year.

Campaigners and politicians are worried about the spate of teenage killings.

In a statement, Knox's parents Colin and Sally said: "Rob was kind and thoughtful and would always help out others.

"The life and soul of the party, he was very outgoing, loved sports, and would always strike up a conversation with people.

"He was respectful to others and adored by all his family and friends."

Film producers Warner Bros said: "We are all shocked and saddened by this news and at this time our sympathies are with his family."

A man came to the bar in Sidcup armed with two knives and was seen waving one of them around through the window.

A scuffle broke out and Knox and his brother Jamie were reportedly trying to protect each other.

Several others sustained knife wounds.

The brothers' friends Tom Hopkins, 18, and Tarik Ozress, 17, managed to pin the armed man down, wrestling with him for several minutes before police arrived.

Hopkins, who was stabbed in the head, said: "Rob was just trying to help out. He was like that. I grabbed the knife, I didn't know at the time that he had another knife. It was just chaos."

Knox was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

Friends said there had been a row over a phone last week and believe it could have been a revenge attack.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a young actor who was stabbed to death in south-east London.

Rob Knox, 18, was stabbed in a fight outside the Metro Bar, Sidcup, in the early hours of Saturday. His parents said he was a kind and thoughtful son.

Unemployed Karl Bishop is accused of killing the teenager and with wounding five other people.

Mr Bishop, of Carlton Road, Sidcup, will appear in Bexleyheath Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

A post-mortem examination held at the Royal Princess Hospital, Farnborough, revealed that Mr Knox died of internal bleeding as a result of stab wounds.

'Fun person'

On Sunday, his father Colin Knox read out a statement to journalists which said: "It's impossible to convey the sadness and loss that we all feel but we now realise Rob touched many people's lives.

"Rob was happy, outgoing and a fun person to be with. He was the social hub of his large circle of friends.

"Rob always put everyone before himself, was always the first person to stand up against wrong. He achieved so much in his short life."

The 18-year-old, who had a small part in the new Harry Potter film, was the 14th teenager to die violently in London this year.

'We Must All Join The Knife Crime Battle'

There is nothing more the Government can do to stop knife crime in Britain and the situation is now in the hands of the public, according to the police minister.

Rob Knox's parents and brother

Tony McNulty told Sky News there will be no knee-jerk legislative action in response to the death of 18-year-old Rob Knox on the weekend.

He was stabbed to death in a fight outside a south east London bar on Saturday - the 14th teenager to die violently in London this year.

Police said a post-mortem showed his death was caused by internal bleeding as a result of stab injuries.

Mr McNulty said the Government has reached the end of the road in terms of legislation and the key to fighting knife crime lay in education, awareness and a collective effort.

Rob Knox's parents and brother

"I would say as strongly as I can it's about all of us and what all of us are going to do," he said.

"In the end, as Rob (Knox)'s parents were saying, it's about... education, awareness and knowing that if your young son especially is going out tonight, whether he's going out with a weapon or not.

"Because the stark message for young people needs to be... 'you will end up either dead or in jail if you persist in carrying a weapon'."

Mr. McNulty also defended police stop and search powers but regretted Operation Blunt 2 was only launched shortly before Rob was killed.

The minister's words follow Sally and Colin Knox's emotional tribute to their son, who they described as "the social hub of his large circle of friends".

Mrs. Knox read from a statement saying: "It's impossible to convey the sadness and loss that we all feel, but we now realize Rob touched many people's lives."

Rob wanted to be full-time actor

She added: "Rob always put everyone before himself, he was always the first person to stand up against wrong. He achieved so much in his short life."

Mr. Knox, 55, said: "With knives there are no winners and only losers. If you are a person who carries a knife, think about the consequences before you carry the knife.

"But if you carry a knife there's the intention to use it, so please don't do that for the sake of my son."

The last conversation the teenager had with his father was on the danger of knives.

Rob wanted to be full-time actor

Addressing the recent wave of knife crime in the capital, Mr. Knox said it was a political issue and added: "There's a lot of fear out there and basically someone has to change the way we think."

Harry Potter actor stabbed to death in mobile phone vendetta
From The Sunday Times

A teenage actor who is to appear in the new Harry Potter film was stabbed to death in the early hours of yesterday during a fight at a bar.

Robert Knox, 18, was murdered outside the Metro bar in Sidcup, southeast London, as he tried to protect his brother Jamie, 17, from a knifeman.

The attack, which left three other people with serious stab wounds, took place just a few miles from where Jimmy Mizen, a 16-year-old altar boy, was murdered two weeks ago while trying to shield his older brother.

Yesterday it emerged that Knox and Jimmy had played for the same rugby club in Sidcup.

Last night, Robert’s parents, Sally, a buyer for Marks & Spencer, and Colin, who is thought to work in advertising, paid tribute to their son in a statement.

“Rob was kind and thoughtful and would always help out others; he would always spend his last penny on other people instead of himself,” they said.

The life and soul of the party, he was very outgoing, loved sports and would always strike up a conversation with people. He was respectful to others and adored by his family and friends.”

Knox, who overcame bullying as a child to break into acting, had just finished filming a small part for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which is due at cinemas in November. He plays a Ravenclaw student called Marcus Belby.

Knox was a former pupil at Beths grammar school in Bexley, whose alumni include Steve Backley, the former Olympic javelin thrower. He is the 14th teenager to be violently killed in London since the start of the year.

Police said the killing was not gang-related and yesterday, as friends laid flowers at the murder scene, close to Sidcup railway station, Lee Bentley, manager of the Metro bar, said the attack appeared to have been triggered by a row over the alleged theft of a mobile phone.

“Nine days ago, a guy came to the bar and caused trouble,” said Bentley. “He accused [Knox’s friend] Dean Saunders of stealing his phone and hit him in the face. We cleaned up Dean and barred the man.”

But the man, who is black and in his twenties, returned on Friday night armed with two knives and tried entering the bar, where Knox was a regular drinker.

What happened next is unclear, but Jade Nicholson, an assistant bar manager, said: “I saw Rob go outside and shout, ‘You pulled a knife on my brother, someone call the police’.”

Tom Hopkins, 18, who was drinking at the bar, said: “Rob had been trying to stop the trouble, it wasn’t his fault.“All I remember was seeing Rob get stabbed in the chest. I ran over and me and my mate Tarik both tackled the black man. I jumped on top of him and he said, ‘I’ve got a knife, I’ve got a knife’. As I tried to grab the knife I didn’t realise he had another one in his other hand and he cut me in the back of the head.

“I was wrestling with him in the bushes and there were a lot of other people who were helping me out. It felt like it went on for six or seven minutes until the police arrived and then I walked around the corner from the bar. That’s when I saw Rob — it’s too horrible to describe what I saw. It was just red blood.”

Police said they were called to “a large disturbance” at the bar on Station Road at 12.07am, but Knox’s life was already seeping away. A friend, who asked not be named, said: “I had him in my arms. He said, ‘I just want some help’ and I laid him on the floor. When the paramedics came, they put pads on his chest to try to revive him, but it was obvious it was too late.”

Knox was taken to Queen Elizabeth hospital in Woolwich, southeast London, where he was pronounced dead just before 1am. A post-mortem is due to be carried out today.

Three other people were seriously injured in the attack, including Saunders, 21, who was stabbed in the neck and remains in hospital. Police said his injuries were serious but not life-threatening. Two other friends, aged 16 and 19, also received treatment.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

London counts cost of weekend of violence
The Guardian, Tuesday May 27 2008

A 21-year old man was charged yesterday with the murder of Harry Potter actor Robert Knox, 18, after a weekend of violence among teenagers in London. Unemployed Karl Bishop, 21, will appear at Bexley magistrates court today, charged with murder and five counts of wounding with intent.

Knox, who had recently finished filming his part in the forthcoming Harry Potter film, was killed outside a bar in Sidcup early on Sunday, becoming the 14th teenager to be murdered in London this year.

It was one of a spate of violent attacks involving young people in and near the capital at the weekend.

A 19-year-old man was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday after being stabbed on Sunday night. He was found slumped at East Ham tube station by British Transport police. A second man, also aged 19, was arrested after being found with head injuries in a road nearby.

Detectives believe there was an altercation near the station between the two men, believed to be Sri Lankan or Tamil. The station was closed yesterday as police search teams combed the area.

Two 17-year-old youths were critically ill in hospital after being shot in north London. One was found in Archway after being shot in the stomach early on Friday. The second was found shot in the head two miles away, in Camden, on Saturday night. Police were investigating yesterday whether the second shooting was revenge for the first. Both incidents are being investigated by Scotland Yard's Operation Trident, which deals with gun crime in the black community.

Essex police said yesterday that four men and a woman were being questioned after an 18-year-old man was left with a punctured lung after being stabbed in Heybridge, near Maldon, early on Saturday morning. A police spokeswoman said the man was in a stable condition in hospital in Chelmsford.

A youth worker yesterday called for zero tolerance on knife crime in the wake of the recent stabbings and shootings. Uanu Seshmi, of the From Boyhood To Manhood Foundation, a charity which works with young people to stop them committing crime, said: "We have to take drastic steps, because otherwise we are just giving the young people free rein. There must be zero tolerance on this. Young people must understand that no one who carries out this kind of gang behaviour will be tolerated. There needs to be drastic measures taken. If that means we need to have curfews, let it be. If that means we need to have more stop and search, let it be."

On Sunday the family of Robert Knox called for an end to the knife crime epidemic. Colin Knox, Robert's father, said: "With knives there are no winners and only losers. If you are a person who carries a knife, think about the consequences before you carry the knife."
